andrew hozier-byrne is an irish singer songwriter and one of the single coolest people in the entire world. his lyricism is like nothing in this world and his voice is beyond divine. he's one of the most talented individuals in the music industry and just ever actually
he has three albums thus far; 'hozier', 'wasteland, baby!' and 'unreal unearth' and every single one of them are masterpieces of the human mind and that we are unworthy to listen to with our filthy caveman ears.
hozier
hozier's first release was take me to church ep, released on september 13th, 2013. take me to church was recorded as a demo in the middle of the night (i think it was like 3 in the morning) in his parents attic and his vocals were SO FUCKING GOOD that they kept them in the actual song.
take me to church absolutely blew up and it's the song that if i asked you about hozier, you'd ask if he was the guy who made take me to church. that or too sweet, which i will go onto later.
that was followed with the release of his eponymous debut album on september 19th, 2014, hozier. this was followed by the special edition with covers, live versions, and 4 extra songs. i love arsonist's lullabye and i will never ever ever shut up about it.
my personal favourite songs from this album are jackie and wilson, sedated, it will come back, foreigner's god, and arsonist's lullabye. i love every song on this album so the smallest i could limit the range down to was 5. i also have the cd for this album on display and i almost never take it out of my cd player because i play it so often, if im using my cd player 90% of the time it'll be to listen to this album
wasteland, baby!
hozier's sophomore album was wasteland baby, which came out march 1st 2019. even though it didn't blow up like his debut album did, it is easily one of the best albums ever written and i will die on that hill
nina cried power is the first song on wasteland baby, a collaboration with mavis staples. mavis staples is a singer and civil rights activist, an amazing and talented woman who famously was a part of the band the 'staple singers', and an activist during the civil rights movement in which she also worked with martin luther king jr. mavis staples and hozier have also performed together and it is AWESOME i'll link it on the next column
the special edition of wasteland baby released on march 1st 2024 to celebrate its five year anniversary, featuring live and acoustic versions of shrike and be, along with 3 new songs. moment's silence should have made it to the album and i will always be mad that it didn't. THIS ALBUM IS AMAZING
unreal unearth
hozier's most recent album, unreal unearth, is in my humble opinion, his best achievement yet. it is my favourite album by him, one of my favourite albums of all time, and one of the best albums of all time, easily.
i feel like a broken record but this album is AMAZING. like jaw droppingly astoundingly insanely incredibly amazing. i, carrion is his most beautiful song lyrically, and i don't say that lightly. it is absolutely perfect. this whole album is fucking nuts and PLEASE GOD PLEASE LISTEN TO IT
unreal unearth came out on the 18th august 2023. the two other versions, unaired and unending, came out on august 19th and december 4th, 2024. the complete version, unreal unearth: unending, stands at an hour and forty minutes with 26 songs total.
though it isn't a concept album, unreal unearth is greatly inspired by dante's inferno, with almost every song on the album representing a circle of hell which i could talk for so long about that i could make a whole other page on it, which i might do actually
the most famous song from this album is too sweet. i remember hearing it in a cafe in amsterdam a few weeks after unending came out and shaking because it was like 7am and i was so tired and excited and it was awesome actually! this is also the other song that if i asked you about hozier, you'd ask if he was the guy who made too sweet! i hear this song on the radio all the time and i freak out EVERY time
favourite songs
1. francesca
2. sunlight
3. it will come back
4. swan upon leda
5. i, carion (icarian)
it will come back performed in 2016 except he was on very strong muscle tranquilisers at the time and it sounds INCREDIBLE
